About the event

Join Linda Miller, professor in George Mason University’s School of Dance, for a conversation with dancer and alumna Leila Mire, live on the Center for the Arts Facebook page. Mire is dancer, choreographer, educator and researcher with a particular interest in orientalism and the intersection between dance, politics, and gender. She is a recent 2020 award recipient of the Young Alumni Commissioning award for her work currently in progress exploring the Ballet Russe's 1910 ballet, "Scheherazade" as a product of colonialist and orientalized imagined renderings of a created "Other." This discussion will center around orientalism in dance and the artistic process of reimagining work through the lens of "Scheherazade," and will include video samples, a glimpse into the research process, and an understanding of how this will go from idea to performance over the course of the next year.
